While the world waits for a turbocharged version of the Honda CR-Z, the automaker’s Mugen skunk works division will unveil a high-performance version of the hybrid at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
Described as delivering “Type R-like” performance, the Mugen-tuned CR-Z will feature upgrades to the standard car’s gas engine and electric drivetrain. The CR-Z Mugen will also feature a sports suspension and better brakes.
Honda has yet to release any performance figures for the CR-Z Mugen, but says power will exceed the standard CR-Z’s 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque. Surprising, Honda also says the tuned CR-Z will deliver better fuel economy than the base CR-Z.
“We wanted to extend the performance of the CR-Z,” said Hiro Toyoda of MUGEN Euro. “It is already a fun car to drive, with an excellent chassis, but we thought that with more power and enhanced torque delivery it could be even more exciting.”
Unfortunately, Honda says the CR-Z Mugen is a one off prototype with no plans for production.
