From the July, 2011 issue of Motor Trend Our long-term Volt spent its first couple months in the hands of Frank Markus and Todd Lassa, our editors in Detroit. While there, it experienced single-digit icy weather, and was put through all the paces any other car would go through, and then some. It performed well, with minor gripes about the overly frugal heater and that the colder weather prompts the engine to come on, even with a fully charged battery. As technical director Markus explains, "Within a few blocks, the engine fired and a dash message read 'ENGINE RUNNING DUE TO TEMPERATURE.' It ran for only a mile or two and then shut off, but repeated this after each of two stops that morning, burning an indicated 0.3 gallon." The Volt is heading to California now.Motor Trend Rating:
