Spokeswoman: Saab to restart production tomorrow

Saab owner Spyker says it is preparing to restart regular vehicle production at its Trollhattan, Sweden, assembly plant tomorrow, after the facility has been idle for about six weeks.

Spyker had been unable to secure much-needed cash to pay some of its suppliers, but the automaker says it has reached agreements that will allow it to begin building cars again.

“Based on the information we have, it looks like we will start up production tomorrow,” spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs told Reuters.

Saab is likely to slowly ramp up production by initially building around 100 cars before resuming its normal 230 to 240 car-per-day rate. Saab builds its 9-3 and 9-5 models in Trollhattan.

As we mentioned yesterday, Saab has been building some cars in Sweden – namely, its new ePower EV fleet. In addition, the automaker’s contract with former owner General Motors to build its new 9-4X crossover was unaffected, meaning that production has been underway in Mexico for the North American-focused new model.

Saab and Spyker are both waiting for the Chinese government to approve a 110 million euro investment from Pangda. However, the Chinese distributor has already paid Saab 30 million euros in advance for new cars to be delivered specifically to the world’s fastest-growing market.
