Hyundai Blue2 Concept: 2011 Seoul Motor Show

Source: MotorAuthority.com

Hyundai’s ongoing commitment to a hydrogen-fueled future shows no sign of slowing following the unveiling today of the new Blue2 concept car at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. The latest concept previews the design of the South Korean automaker’s next-generation sedan models and also picks up the latest in hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Like most fuel cell vehicles, the Hyundai Blue2 features a hydrogen-powered fuel cell stack, which uses the abundant gas to generate electricity, which in turn powers a fairly conventional electric drive system. Peak output of the fuel cell is around 120 horsepower and according to Hyundai its fuel economy is around 82 mpg--of hydrogen, that is.

To further boost fuel economy, the Blue2 also gets special aerodynamically shaped alloy wheels and low rolling resistant tires.

As for the vehicle body itself, Hyundai’s designers describe it as being a luxury sedan packed with the latest technology. Special features include LED screen panels located on the exterior designed to appeal to the visual sensors.

Inside, there’s a welcome system which recognizes the driver and can then operate a self-opening door. Conventional side mirrors are replaced by side cameras and a roof camera, and to keep things cool and calm inside the Blue2 also gets an air ionizing system that cleans the air circulating through the cabin.

Hyundai debuts Blue2 Hydrogen Concept at Seoul Motor Show

Thursday, Mar 31st, 2011 @ 3:55 a.m.

The alternative energy future is still an open ended question, and automakers continue to offer up their version of the answer.

This time around it is Hyundai, and their answer is a hydrogen-powered concept known as the Blue2 (read: Blue square), which was revealed today at the Seoul Motor Show in the automaker’s domestic market of South Korea. For those of you that follow Hyundai, you may recognize the use of “Blue,” borrowed from Hyundai’s Blue Drive technology, which was then combined with H2 (hydrogen) to form the vehicle’s name.

Although the spec sheet for a hydrogen-powered car doesn’t read quite like its gas-powered counterparts, one will find a correlation to another type of alternative energy driven vehicle: the electric car. For instance, the Blue2 features a hydrogen fuel stack that cranks out 90kW – or 1.65kW per liter – and a fuel economy rating of 34.9 kilometers per liter, or roughly 82 miles per gallon.

Similarities to hybrids and electric vehicles continue with the use of low rolling resistance tires and special light-weight alloy wheels with a closed front design, intended to improve aerodynamic performance and reduce the energy input required to turn the wheels.

Other less eco-minded features include automatically opening doors, asymmetric instrument cluster and dashboard, an information system driven by a motion sensing moustick, which is a haptic wheel that uses a motion sensor to detect driver’s touch. Slightly eco-minded, and slightly cosmetically minded are side mirrors that are replaced by cameras, as well as the use of special ultra-light tempered glass, known as Gorilla glass, which help to display graphic information from a transparent organic light emitting diode (TOLED) monitor.

Hyundai didn’t give any indication as to whether or not the Blue2 itself has production in its future, but the automaker did suggest that its design is a preview of production vehicles to come.

The Standard of The World bags Motor Trend Classic Trophy at Amelia Island 2011

1957-cadillac-eldorado-biarritz-front
George and Nancy Weaver, of East Earl, Pennsylvania, had the right combination of car, presentation, and quality all wrapped up in their magnificent 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, to snag the Motor Trend Classic Trophy at this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.  It was a difficult choice, with a field full of Cobras and Ferrari Daytonas, but this big Caddy spoke to me as a car I’d really enjoy driving back from Amelia Island Florida, back to our LA area offices.  I’d keep that top down, sing to myself, and just cruise, baby.  This dual-quad Caddy has the power to haul, but what’s the rush.  It’s all about style.  I’d also check in with road chef, author, and TV host Guy Fieri for his recommendation of all the diners, drive-ins, and dives that I should check out as I traversed the southern United States in this decidedly dreamy ride.

Video: Rolls-Royce 102 EX Phantom Electric, Geneva Motor Show

Source: GreenCarReports.com

An all-electric Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Just think about it: If the engineers do their jobs properly, the occupants should sense absolutely no difference in the near-silent, creamy smooth surge of power that wafts them from estate to yacht, or factory to mansion.

And now we have video, courtesy of Rolls-Royce itself, whose CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös discusses the 102 EX Phantom Experimental Electric concept that was unveiled this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

The car will embark on a year-long world tour once the show closes, with the company showing the car to owners, prospects, enthusiasts, and members of the media globally.

The goal is simply to learn whether the electric Phantom provides all the qualities that are expected of a Rolls-Royce, without compromise.

The video is below, with other coverage including live photos of the 102 EX Experimental Electric on the show floor and more video as well.

Mazda Minagi Concept: 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Source: MotorAuthority.com

With its latest concept car, the all-new 2011 Mazda Minagi, Mazda is essentially giving us a preview of its replacement for the Tribute compact SUV. The aging Tribute is long overdue for an update and reports of a sharper and more dynamic compact crossover from Mazda date back to early 2007, so it’s not at all surprising to see the Minagi at this week’s 2011 Geneva Motor show.

We’ve known about the Minagi for some time now but today we have the first official images and details of the new concept.

The Minagi is the latest iteration of the Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ Soul of Motion design theme. We first saw Kodo on the stunning 2010 Shinari Concept and now we get to see it in crossover form. Its styling has clearly been derived from the Shinari, which we all know will influence the automaker’s future models. We got that confirmation from Mazda chief designer Ikuo Maeda last September, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Mazda launch a new model, possibly labeled CX-5, resembling the new Mingai.

Mazda describes the vehicle as a “unique crossover SUV for urban explorers which fuses emotional design with outstanding performance”.

Additionally, the Minagi also combines Mazda's SKYACTIV technologies, which consists of the automaker’s next-generation powertrain, vehicle body and chassis designs. In the case of the new Minagi, the concept is equipped with a SKYACTIV engine and SKYACTIV transmission fitted to a SKYACTIV-Body and chassis that merge comprehensive weight reduction with ample safety features.

2011 Ford B-Max Concept Live Photos: 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Fiesta-based, powered by a punchy three-cylinder turbo 1.0-liter engine, and seating five (assuming they're family or very good friends) the Ford B-Max Concept is the new new thing in tiny MPVs.

It's also an exercise in design, with its magical disappearing B-pillar built into the doors. As you can tell from the photos, the B-Max is ready for prime time. We still don't know if it would come to the U.S. should it get the green light, but given Ford's seriousness with its global strategy of late, we wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Audi A3 Sedan Concept: 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Source: MotorAuthority.com

Following yesterday’s leak and the official stuff we saw last month, Audi has finally released the full gamut of images and details on its svelte new A3 Sedan Concept, which is on display this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The car is a preview of the next-generaiton A3 and represents the typical Audi language of sporty elegance. It integrates the now familiar single-frame grille, with its tapered upper corners and headlights, with the latest generation of Audi's LED technology. The low, flowing roof dome and a coupe-like low C-pillar are among the distinctive features of the side view.

Interestingly, Audi has fitted carbon fiber pieces for several components of the body. These include the single-frame grille, side view mirrors, and rear diffuser insert. Thanks to such weight saving, the concept tips the scales at 3,395--nothing to brag about but reasonable given the technology inside.

Measurements confirm it will remain in the small car segment: 14.57 feet in length, 6.04 feet in width and 4.56 feet in height.

On the center console are four large round air vents. The air flow is adjusted by pulling and pushing on the center axis of the vents. The control knobs for the automatic air conditioning system are located in the lower section of the center console and are joined by a round MMI controller with a touch pad surface.

Located behind the compact, flat-bottomed, three-spoke multifunction steering wheel are two analog dial instruments with black dials and red needles, complemented by additional kidney-shaped displays. In between the two large round dials is the large, eight-inch display for the driver information system. The display is user-programmable--the driver can select the content to be displayed from an extensive menu.

Under the hood sits a turbocharged five-cylinder engine with 408 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque on tap. This is linked with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, suggesting that a high-performance RS3 version is planned.

Audi promises a 0-62 mph time of just 4.1 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. In terms of fuel consumption, the four-seater gets by on 25.85 mpg for the European combined cycle and emits 341.18 g of CO2 per mile.

The next-generation Audi A3, meanwhile, is on track for its sales debut in the second half of next year, most likely making the new A3 Sedan a 2013 model year runner. For more details, check out our previous post by clicking here.

2011 Geneva Motor Show Preview: Mazda Minagi Concept

Source: MotorAuthority.com

Just hours after today’s earlier leak of the new Minagi Concept, Mazda has released full details for its latest concept and confirmed that it will be appearing for the first time at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The concept is said to be a preview of a brand new compact crossover from Mazda but it’s also the latest iteration of the automaker's ‘Kodo’ Soul of Motion design theme. We first saw Kodo on the stunning 2010 Shinari Concept and now we get to see it in crossover form.

The Minagi's styling has clearly been derived from the Shinari, which we all know will influence the automaker’s future models--we got that confirmation from Mazda’s chief designer, Ikuo Maeda, last September.

The aging Mazda Tribute is long overdue for an update and reports of a sharper and more dynamic compact crossover from Mazda date back to early 2007, so it’s not at all surprising to see that the Japanese automaker is working on just such a model with the new Minagi.

Any new compact crossover from Mazda will likely be called the CX-5 and go up against vehicles like the Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota Rav4 and possibly even the upcoming BMW X1. To keep it as fuel efficient as possible, the crossover is expected to feature a partial all-wheel drive system, with drive being sent to the front wheels in most situations and the rears only kicking in during loss of traction.

2011 Geneva Motor Show Preview: Infiniti Etherea Concept

Source: MotorAuthority.com

The autoshow season is fully upon us, as we transition from the Chicago show to Geneva next month and New York in April. Infiniti is gearing up to make the most of the Geneva Motor Show with a new compact concept performance car positioned below the G line, dubbed the Etherea.

The official images above hint at a likely relationship to corporate partner Renault small car lines with a touch of Essence Concept thrown in for good measure. If that's the case, it's not clear that it'll be destined for the U.S.; such a concept might be intended only to do battle with the smaller BMW and Mercedes vehicles on their home turf.

The company's senior vice president, Andy Palmer, called the car slated for Geneva a "study for a high-performance premium car below the current G series." Palmer also claims the car is "fundamentally different" from competing products--though how so, we're unsure.

The new compact Infiniti concept will make its official debut March 1, at 12:15 p.m. GMT.

For a comprehensive, speculative look at what form the car will take, including its drivetrain and performance targets, check out our previous coverage here.

2011 Renault R-Space Concept Live Photos: 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Imagined as a family car for the future, Renault's new R-Space concept offers a sporty, flowing silhouette with a unique interior space and wide-opening suicide doors.

The inside might look a bit familiar if you're a fan of TV's Cash Cab, but otherwise, it's pure concept. Futuristic tiled themes meet with organic shapes and interlocking seating that will never see a production line, but looks cool on the floor in Geneva.

It's designed to be environmentally friendly, too, with a 900-cc three-cylinder engine paired to a dual-clutch gearbox. Renault says it produces the same performance as a typical 1.6-liter four-cylinder, and is rated at 110 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque--impressive figures for such a tiny engine. That could equate to fuel economy as good as 63.5 US mpg--in a vehicle designed to seat five.

Not bad Renault. Now lets see it as a Nissan, in more production-ready trim.

2011 Geneva Motor Show: Nissan ESFLOW Concept Live Photos

Source: AllCarsElectric.com

While its official world debut isn’t pegged until the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks, the Nissan ESFLOW electric sports car concept has been revealed in the flesh--or should we say aluminum and carbon fiber?--at a special media event in Frankfurt, Germany today.

The High Gear Media team was on hand to bring you these live shots of the striking concept, revealing it in the utmost detail and giving us a look at its futuristic interior for the first time.

The ESFLOW is Nissan’s vision of what a zero-emission electric sports car could look like, and based on what we’ve seen we have to admit we’re like it. Using technology pioneered in the Leaf, the new concept shows that driving can still be as much fun tomorrow as it is today.

Most of its specs are already known; with a lightweight aluminum chassis, composite body and the same lithium-ion battery pack found in the Leaf, the ESFLOW promises a range of at least 150 miles per charge and exhilarating performance.

Speaking of the battery pack, it's mounted low and with a mind for weight distribution, the better to preserve handling balance. Nissan says the rear-wheel drive ESFLOW will also do 0-62 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, which puts in on par with most of the top sports cars on the market today.

So how close is the ESFLOW to a production reality? Surprisingly close despite the funky look. Nissan says the concept is based on existing technology, but "implemented in innovative ways." Those wild curves, for instance, aren't steel, but composite, and they're wrapped over an aluminum chassis. And the powertrain, as mentioned, is a beefed up version of the setup found in the Leaf.

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show kicks off on March 1. Follow our complete coverage of the event by clicking here.

Toyota FT-86 II Concept teaser

We already know that Toyota will be unveiling an updated version of its FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports car concept at next month’s 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the aptly named FT-86 II, which we saw a teaser of last month, but now the Japanese auto giant has confirmed several other world premieres.

We can also reveal that the upcoming show will be graced by the appearance of a new electric car based on the Toyota iQ, as well as a concept car previewing a hybrid version of the next-generation of Toyota’s popular compact car. Finally, Toyota will also debut the European version of the more versatile Prius V, the new seven-seat Prius+.

Toyota FT-86 II Concept: 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Source: MotorAuthority.com

Toyota’s long-awaited rear-wheel drive sports car that it's developing together with Subaru has been confirmed for launch in 2012 and at this week’s 2011 Geneva Motor Show the Japanese auto giant has unveiled a new concept car previewing it.

Dubbed the FT-86 II, the new concept is based on the original FT-86 from 2009 and looks a lot more like a production model. Toyota admits that it is the strongest indication yet of how the production model will look and that it has clearly been inspired by Toyota’s sports cars of the past, such as the legendary 2000 GT of the 1960s.

The concept was penned at Toyota’s European design studio (ED2) and features a long, low bonnet, high wings and a rear-set cabin. It measures 4,235 mm in length, 1,795 mm across and sits 1,270 mm high. Its wheelbase is 2,570 mm in length.

A quick refresher on the FT-86: built as a joint project with Subaru, the car is a rear-drive, roughly 3,000-pound, 200 horsepower, flat-four-powered coupe.

Subaru is also thought to be working on a turbocharged "STI" version of the car, but no word of a similar high-performance variant has come from Toyota.

We should receive more info on the car’s mechanicals as Subaru is set to preview its new rear-wheel drive chassis and powertrain combo at the same Geneva event.

Tata Pixel Concept: Nano's 69-MPG Pal, 2011 Geneva Motor Show

Source: GreenCarReports.com

The world's least expensive new car, India's Tata Nano, is now selling across that country, with plans afoot to offer an upgraded version in Europe this year or in 2012.

Meanwhile, carmaker Tata (which owns Jaguar Land Rover) is hardly standing still. At this week's 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Tata rolled out the Pixel Concept, its idea of an ultra-efficient urban car.

The Pixel is aimed mostly at European and Asian markets, where fuel is far pricier than in the U.S. And many of its features are meant to make it stand out in crowded, space-constrained urban streets.

Tata says the Pixel, which is almost exactly 10 feet long, "comfortably accommodates four adults," unlike minicars like the Smart ForTwo and the 2012 Scion iQ.

Its scissor doors open up, rather than out, meaning they stay within the Pixel's footprint without impinging on traffic, cyclists, or pedestrians passing just inches away.

Even more ingenious, its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) can rotate one rear wheel forward and the other backward, which combines with acute angles on the front wheels to give a turning circle of just 8.5 feet.

The engine is a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder diesel, well suited to Europe's preference for small passenger diesels. As in the four-seat, four-door Tata Nano, it is positioned under the rear seat to drive the rear wheels in a "rear-mid engine" layout.

Tata designed the Pixel for low aerodynamic drag--a challenge in such a short car--and included engine start-stop, low rolling-resistance tires, and other fuel efficiency technologies.

The result is estimated fuel economy on the European combined cycle of 69 miles per gallon.

The Pixel's styling reminds us of nothing so much as the Kia Pop concept, also an urban car--although electrically powered--shown at last fall's Paris Motor Show.

The driver can control certain key functions using a smart phone running "My Tata Connect," neatly shifting the cost of some expensive electronics onto the driver.

Though we're not sure how you would get the car home if your smart phone were stolen ....
