BMW aims for China with M3 Matte Edition

Wednesday, Mar 30th, 2011 @ 9:06 a.m.

Although the Chinese market has only had access to BMW’s high-performance M3 for the last handful of years, the automaker will celebrate the sports car’s 25th anniversary in high style in the rapidly-growing market with a special M3 Matte Edition.

As its name implies, the Matte Edition features a flat black paint scheme from the BMW ColorSystem. BMW says that it can only make a handful of matte-painted cars a day because of the difficulty producing the paint scheme, so production for China will be limited.

Red brake calipers surrounded by high-gloss black or regular silver 19-inch alloy wheels complete the exterior transformation.

The M3 Matte Edition also gains black carbon fiber-style leather trim, red interior stitching and a few other interior goodies.

The standard M3 420 horsepower V8 remains, as does its seven-speed dual clutch transmission

BMW hasn’t said when the special edition M3 will hit dealership lots in China.

Disturbing video of careless motorist accidents in China [Video]

Tuesday, Mar 29th, 2011 @ 4:48 p.m.

Trying to describe this video is actually quite difficult. On one hand seeing some of the fatal accidents evokes sympathy and sorrow, but on the other the sheer level of insanity, carelessness, stupidity and sheer disbelief in what is happening is almost overwhelming.

The video was posted by Chinese authorities, apparently in some type of effort to warn motorists and bicyclists of the dangers of their driving habits, especially given the seemingly lawless intersections.

Beware that there is some graphic content in the video, but the majority of the video will just leave you asking, “Why,” “How?” and “What were they thinking?”

Tip: turn the audio off, or at least down – the overly dramatic music is enough to drive you to the edge of insanity in and of itself.

Chevy to call Camaro “Ke Mai Luo” in China

Tuesday, Mar 22nd, 2011 @ 11:54 a.m.

In an effort to cater to the world’s largest and most rapidly-growing new car market, Chevrolet has renamed its iconic Camaro “Ke Mai Luo.”

Ke Mai Luo, or ???, is a “sonorous” name easier for Chinese consumers to pronounce than Camaro. Few other changes are expected to be made to the two-door sports coupe when it enters the Chinese market later this year.

Officially set to be unveiled in April at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Ke Mai Luo will be the bowtie brand’s range-topper in China, a market where Chevrolet is considered an entry-level import brand a step above most domestic offerings but still a step below rivals with wider lineups like Buick and Volkswagen.

Chevrolet says that the car will list from approximately 500,000 Chinese yuan (around $76,000) when equipped with the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, a figure that represents a hefty premium over any other Chevrolet in China.

At 225,000 yuan, the Chevrolet Captiva crossover is the brand’s most expensive offering in the market. In fact, the Ke Mai Luo will be nearly 10 times the price of the Chinese market-only Chevrolet Sail, the bowtie brand’s entry-level model.

BMW CEO Reithofer Teases 5-Series New Energy Vehicle For China

Source: MotorAuthority.com

Next month's Shanghai Motor Show will host the debut of a new BMW: the 5-Series "New Energy Vehicle," a plug-in hybrid that BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer is "from China for China."

Early word of the New Energy Vehicle first emerged from unofficial channels in January, but Reithofer confirmed the car in a speech this week. We don't expect the car, built around the long-wheelbase version of the 5-Series, and featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain, to be sold in the U.S., but a variant of the technology might be. We've already spotted the ActiveHybrid 5 in testing, and BMW has plans for a hybrid 3-Series as well, so it's likely that all of these cars will be related in technology, if not in name.

Reithofer was otherwise cryptic about the New Energy Vehicle, adding only a corporate-speak line that it will "benefit from the strength and excellent reputation of the BMW brand."

With the New York Auto Show set to kick off around the same time as the Shanghai show (they actually overlap) there's a chance we'll see the production 5-Series ActiveHybrid we expected at Geneva at the same time the Chinese get their New Energy Vehicle.

The ActiveHybrid 5 Concept (pictured) was first shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, equipped with a six-cylinder gasoline engine and a mild hybrid solution aiming for 10 percent reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.
