2012 Chevy Sonic Subcompact To Start At $14,495

Chevrolet has announced pricing for the 2012 Sonic, which replaces the discontinued Chevrolet Aveo. Sonic sedan models will start at $14,495 including destination charge, which makes Chevy’s subcompact sedan $500 more expensive than a comparable Ford Fiesta sedan. If hatchbacks are your preference, the least expensive Sonic starts at $15,395, while the least expensive Fiesta hatchback is $16,295 which gives the nod to the Sonic for hatchback value.

Chevrolet is quick to point out that the new Sonic is the only subcompact built in America, and that the car comes with best-in-class safety equipment and acceleration. The acceleration claim is for Sonic models equipped with the optional 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission, which also returns fuel economy up to 40 miles per gallon in highway driving.

Chevy’s vice president of marketing, Rick Scheidt, was quick to establish a link between the Sonic and Chevy’s more sporting offerings, saying, “Sonic shares the spirits of Chevrolets like the Corvette by delivering athletic and agile performance. Today’s customers have high expectations for small cars. Sonic comes with an unexpected level of standard equipment so that every customer will have comforts and amenities they desire.”

Scheidt’s comments aside, don’t look for the Sonic to offer a Carbon version any time soon. In fact, the Z Spec package that will be marketed for the car will be focused on appearance, not added performance. Still, the Sonic does come well equipped for the price, offering standard features like 15-inch alloy wheels and a hill-holder function that others charge extra for.

Will that be enough to create a Sonic sales boom for Chevrolet? We’ll know when the car hits dealerships this fall.

Video: Chevy Builds Field Of Dreams In California -- Your Community Could Be Next

Chevy's 'Diamonds and Dreams' makeover in Granite, CA

Chevy's 'Diamonds and Dreams' makeover in Granite, CA

Enlarge Photo

About a year ago, Chevrolet launched an online contest for communities across the U.S. The five grand prize winners of the "Building Diamonds and Dreams" competition would receive makeovers for their youth baseball fields, courtesy of Chevrolet and Scotts Company.

The contest ended around July 30 of last year, and since then, Chevy and Scotts have been hard at work refurbishing diamonds and dugouts at sites throughout the country. Earlier this month, the two companies unveiled their latest completed project in Granite Bay, California. And now, there's video:

We admit, we had some initial concerns about the "Diamonds and Dreams" contest, which seemed weighted to favor folks in well-educated communities with plenty of web access and ample time to submit regular entries. (Participants could submit up to one entry per day throughout the run of the contest.)

That said, the results of the makeover are impressive, and the folks in Granite Bay look very appreciative. Add to that the long-standing tie-in between Chevy and baseball, and we'd say this project was a big win for all involved. (We would've said "home run", but even we know when to cut a metaphor short.)

Even better: Chevy is relaunching the contest in 2011, and this time around, the company will offer a total of 20 field makeovers, among other prizes. The competition hasn't officially begun yet, but if you visit the Diamonds and Dreams website, you can sign up to receive an email when things go live on March 31. Good luck!

For more details about the Granite Bay unveiling, feel free to check the press release below.

Chevrolet Hits Home Run with 'Dream' Baseball Diamond at Ronald Feist Park in Granite Bay

Local leaders to host community event, March 16 at 4:00 PM to dedicate renovated field

GRANITE BAY, Calif., March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- What started as a simple online ZIP code nomination by area-residentMarie Kennedy became a boon for local baseball teams when a Lakeside Little League field was chosen as one of five winners of Chevrolet's Building Diamonds and Dreams program.

Local winner Kennedy selected the Lakeside Little League to be the beneficiary of the field renovation.  Lakeside Little League uses Ronald Feist Park, a multi-field baseball/softball complex owned and maintained by Placer County.

"I was so thrilled because it was for the kids," said local resident Kennedy, who nominated Granite Bay for a field makeover.  "These Little Leagues, no matter what the town, depend on donations and help from the community. I'm very happy that I entered the Building Diamonds and Dreams program and ended up a finalist."

Now that spring is here and the baseball season is about to start, the entire community is invited to the field dedication ceremony on Wednesday, March 16 at 4:00 PM at the Coker-Ewing Field at Ronald Feist Park, 9177 Twin Schools Road,Granite Bay, CA 95746.

The 2010 Building Diamonds and Dreams program, sponsored by Chevrolet and The Scotts Company, was an online promotion where fans of local youth baseball teams nominated their community for a chance to win a field makeover.  Five winners were drawn from all entries and the winners chose the youth league of their choice to receive the professional field renovation.

The refurbishments focused on the aesthetics and playability of the field by providing Major League quality materials for the renovation. For the Coker-Ewing field at Feist Park, the makeover included a reconstructed pitcher's mound, new infield skin, re-cut base paths, new home plate and bases, drainage installation, new coaches' boxes, and other upgrades.  Renovations were completed in November of 2010 by Ripken Design, the sports design and consulting firm owned by National Baseball Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken, Jr. and 12-year Major League Baseball veteran, Bill Ripken.

’13 Chevy Malibu to gain innovative fold-up audio display [Plus video!]

Thursday, Apr 14th, 2011 @ 12:01 a.m.

Chevrolet is slowly letting loose details on its upcoming 2013 Malibu sedan, including its latest tidbit – a radio face that articulates up and out of the way to reveal a six-inch-deep illuminated storage compartment.

The innovative feature is a midsize sedan first, GM says. The one small teaser photo GM has released also gives us a quick glimpse into the Malibu’s new infotainment system, but we’ll have to wait for more details.

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will make its global debut at the Shanghai Motor Show about 48 hours before its bows on U.S. soil at the New York International Auto Show.

New video gives us best look yet
GM teamed up with the dark side – veteran spy photographer Jim Dunne – to talk about what it takes to “outsmart a spy.”

The video gives few unknown hints into the process of new car spying, but it does give us by far our best look at the new 2013 Malibu. Clearly, the Malibu follows many of the styling themes of the current model, but the look will be considerably more bold than before.

We also get a quick glance of the Malibu with its trunk open, which shows that GM has skipped the space-saving (and costly) struts for gooseneck hinges.

Designer video
GM released a short video with some reasonably detailed illustrations of the new car that give us some other hints about its design. Narrated by designer Dan Gifford, the video shows us that GM drew heavily on its heritage for the new four-door sedan.

We were treated to a sneak peak of Chevrolet’s upcoming 2013 Malibu more than a year ago, but GM has remained mum about its plans for the next generation of its bread-and butter sedan. Now, however, a report suggests that Chevrolet will drop the low-volume V6 currently offered in the Malibu in favor of a Hyundai Sonata-inspired four-cylinder-only lineup.

Hyundai became the first mainstream automaker to drop V6 power from its midsize sedan lineup when it launched the 2011 Sonata earlier this year. The midsize family sedan market has seen V6s go from being the default choice for most buyers to an “extravagant” extra rarely selected by consumers.

The 2013 Malibu will drop its V6 in favor of at least two four-cylinders – one naturally aspirated unit and one turbocharged offering. GM is developing a new family of four-cylinder engines, although it’s unclear if the 2.5-liter variant will be ready in time for the Malibu’s late 2011 release.

Judging from the latest spy shots and the videos, the 2013 Malibu will retain many of the design cues of the current car, although it will be moving to GM’s Epsilon II platform. The front headlights appear to have a jeweled look, not unlike the treatment seen on the 2011 Buick Regal. Chevrolet’s signature cross-bar grille, however, remains front and center.

The rear of the Malibu also appears to be in line for an update, with the taillights receiving a Camaro-like treatment.

It’s been reported that the Malibu will shrink a bit in its next iteration, but the extent of that downsizing remains unknown. The current Malibu rides on a 112.3 inch wheelbase and it seems likely that the Malibu will adopt either the Buick LaCrosse’s 111.7 inch wheelbase or the Regal’s shorter 107.8 inch wheelbase, although the former seems more likely. Both the LaCrosse and Regal ride on versions of GM’s Epsilon II platform.

GM will also likely continue to offer a larger midsize sedan to replace the aging Impala.

We’ll have more details on April 18, when GM officially unveils the new Malibu.

Look for sales to begin late this summer in North America – and China, where the Malibu will displace the Chevrolet Cruze as Chevy’s biggest offering.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Saturn Vue Returns As Chevy Captiva

Source: GreenCarReports.com

The shuttered Saturn brand is quickly fading from memory, but now GM plans to bring back one former Saturn model to live on in a new incarnation.

But even if you're a Saturn fan, you won't be able to buy one--unless you're a business.

Vue redux

The compact crossover that sold for only two years as the 2008 and 2009 Saturn Vue will return to the U.S. market as the 2012 Chevrolet Captiva Sport--the name under which it's sold in Mexico, where it's built, and many other global markets as well.

Saturn was sold only in North America, so when it was time to replace the Vue crossover, General Motors turned to its global lineup of vehicles and re-branded the Captiva as the Vue.

Now the Captiva (nee Vue) is the solution to a happy problem faced by the new, post-bankruptcy GM: more demand for compact crossovers than it can supply.

Problem: too much success

The very successful 2011 Chevrolet Equinox crossover is selling as fast as GM can build it. The company even squeezed extra capacity out of one Canadian plant by trucking body shells 120 miles for final assembly in a second plant, but that still can't satisfy the demand.

So the company has decided that it will direct the new, stylish Equinox toward retail consumers, who are more likely to tick the boxes for profitable options and high-end luxury models.

Fleet buyers--from small businesses to large corporations--who buy dozens or hundreds of small crossovers at a time will be pointed toward the older (but presumably affordable) Captiva Sport.

Equinox-equivalent engines

Like the 2011 Equinox, the 2012 Captiva Sport will be offered with 2.4-liter four or a 3.0-liter V-6 engines, both direct injected and coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Its gas-mileage figures may equal or be slightly lower than those for the Equinox, which range from 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway for the four to 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway for the V-6 model fitted with all-wheel-drive.

Three trim levels are planned, following the Chevy practice of LS, LT, and LTZ. Both LT models come with the V-6 as standard equipment. The LTZ model includes all-wheel-drive, as well as leather trim and a 10-speaker sound system.

Pretty nice for a fleet car, hmmm?

Clever Chevy

It's a smart move by GM, frankly. The Captiva is roughly the same size as the Equinox, there's spare capacity in the Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, plant where it's built for Latin and South American makrets--and the development work had already been done to enable the former Saturn Vue to meet U.S. safety and emissions regulations.

But the 2012 Captiva Sport will only be offered to fleet buyers at selected Chevrolet dealers. Actual civilian retail buyers won't be able to order it.

Want to drive a Captiva Sport yourself? Make friends with your local airport rental-lot manufacturer.

Handful of fleet-only models

In the last decade, automakers have offered a handful of models offered only to fleet buyers. Chevrolet itself kept the 1997-2003 Malibu in production as the "Chevrolet Classic" during 2004 and 2005, for rental-car companies and other buyers, after it was replaced for 2004 with a redesigned model.

And it briefly did the same with the 2007 Malibu after it was replaced by an all-new 2008 model.

But perhaps the best-known fleet vehicle is the ancient Ford Crown Victoria, the ubiquitous full-size sedan beloved of taxi cab owners, police forces, and other fleet buyers across the country. Last redesigned in 1998, the Ford Crown Victoria has been sold as a fleet-only vehicle since 2008.

Until the closure of Mercury last year, retail buyers could get essentially the same car as a Mercury Grand Marquis. But now, the Crown Vic will live out the rest of its limited lifespan being sold only in bulk to commercial operators.

To fill that gap, Chevy will offer a second fleet-only model, the Caprice rear-wheel drive sedan built in Australia and closely related to the also-discontinued Pontiac G8 sports sedan.

The 2012 Chevrolet Captiva Sport goes on sale to fleet buyers in the fourth quarter of this year. Pricing hasn't been announced.

Chevy to call Camaro “Ke Mai Luo” in China

Tuesday, Mar 22nd, 2011 @ 11:54 a.m.

In an effort to cater to the world’s largest and most rapidly-growing new car market, Chevrolet has renamed its iconic Camaro “Ke Mai Luo.”

Ke Mai Luo, or ???, is a “sonorous” name easier for Chinese consumers to pronounce than Camaro. Few other changes are expected to be made to the two-door sports coupe when it enters the Chinese market later this year.

Officially set to be unveiled in April at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Ke Mai Luo will be the bowtie brand’s range-topper in China, a market where Chevrolet is considered an entry-level import brand a step above most domestic offerings but still a step below rivals with wider lineups like Buick and Volkswagen.

Chevrolet says that the car will list from approximately 500,000 Chinese yuan (around $76,000) when equipped with the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, a figure that represents a hefty premium over any other Chevrolet in China.

At 225,000 yuan, the Chevrolet Captiva crossover is the brand’s most expensive offering in the market. In fact, the Ke Mai Luo will be nearly 10 times the price of the Chinese market-only Chevrolet Sail, the bowtie brand’s entry-level model.
