Hyundai recalling 95,000 Elantra models over air bag defect

Friday, Mar 18th, 2011 @ 5:15 p.m.

Hyundai is recalling over 95,000 Elantra compact models over an air bag defect. The recall covers 2007-08 model year Elantras built between July 14, 2006 and August 29, 2007.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the sensor in the Elantra’s driver’s seat could send the wrong seat position to the air bag, potentially increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

The Elantra’s seat sensor is intended to relay the driver’s seat position to the air bag, thereby adjusting the pressure of the air bag in the event of a crash. However, the vehicles in question may send an unstable electrical signal from the seat to the air bag system, causing the air bag to deploy at the wrong pressure.

Hyundai dealers will remedy the problem by reprogramming the air bag control module. The recall is scheduled to begin next month.

In total, the recall covers 95,783 vehicles.
