Chevrolet Cruze Brings Midsize Car Presence To The Compact Car Segment
DETROIT – The U.S. production version of the Chevrolet Cruze, unveiled at the 2009 L.A. Auto Show, delivers many segment-leading features and details that challenge preconceived notions about what a compact car can be in North America.
The Cruze also affirms Chevrolet’s commitment to building refined, fuel-efficient vehicles using new, small-displacement four-cylinder engines. It is expected to deliver segment-leading fuel economy with a new Ecotec 1.4L I-4 turbo with variable valve timing – including up to 40 mpg on the highway with a high-efficiency model.
“Cruze is already a hit across Europe and Asia and now, it’s coming to America to challenge the status quo,” said Jim Campbell, general manager, Chevrolet. “Along with the Volt electric vehicle, Cruze is the latest tangible example of how Chevrolet is working to bring new products to market that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.”
Leveraging Chevrolet’s design and engineering talent in Asia, Europe and North America, the Cruze brings a progressive, globally influenced design complemented by exceptional levels of quietness, quality and attention to detail – from precise tolerances between body panels to the use of premium materials throughout the interior.
“The amenities, quietness and roominess you expect in larger cars are what the Cruze delivers,” said Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. “This is a car that will shake up the compact segment, with a more spacious interior and more cargo room than the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.”
Cruze goes on sale in the U.S. in the third quarter but has already logged more than 4 million miles in quality and durability testing worldwide, making it one of the most real world-tested GM products prior to a U.S. launch. The U.S. and Canadian versions of the Cruze will be built in Lordstown, Ohio, where $350 million was invested for their production.
More than expected
The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will be offered in LS, LT and LTZ trims. Standard and available equipment includes:
All models share an interior characterized by premium materials and a lengthy roster of unexpected equipment, including leading infotainment. A stereo system that includes MP3 playback capability, six speakers and an auxiliary jack for personal playback devices is standard. A premium Pioneer sound system is available, as is a USB port for iPod operation. Other available technologies include Bluetooth and a navigation system.
“There’s a lot of content in all Cruze models; it was designed to give customers the features they want regardless of the car’s size or segment,” said Brooks. “At a very competitive price, you’ll be able to get a Cruze with leather and heated front seats, 16-inch aluminum wheels, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar, Bluetooth, a USB port for your iPod, cruise control, power locks and power outside mirrors.”
Arching roofline
Chevy Cruze’s design is distinguished with a bold face – including a two-tier grille with the iconic Bowtie logo – that is Chevrolet’s signature look around the globe. An arching roofline connects a steeply raked windshield and fast-sloping rear pillars to give the car a sporty, coupe-like proportion.
The sporty aesthetic is also seen in prominent headlamp housings that wrap around the corners and sweep upward in the fenders and sculpted hood, as well as a short rear deck typically found on sport coupes. The wheels are at the corners, too, with minimal front and rear overhangs. All the elements work cohesively to give Cruze an aggressive look that is complemented by a wide, confident-looking stance.
Indeed, the Cruze is wider and longer than most of its competitors. Taut, tightly drawn bodywork conveys solidity, while restrained use of exterior trim enhances the car’s high-quality feel. The overall appearance is one of purposeful precision.
Precision is also seen in the Cruze’s build quality. The Lordstown assembly plant’s body shop was retooled with the latest in body-framing and welding equipment to optimize the manufacture of a very solid body structure. That strong structure fosters minimal production variance and repeatable gap tolerances of 3 mm or less between most exterior panels. To the customer, this means a better-looking car when new and one that feels solid for years to come.
Interior refinement
Cruze’s bold design cues and attention to detail carry over to the interior, where Chevrolet's hallmark twin-cockpit motif is matched with high-quality materials and exceptional assembly tolerances. Grained, soft-touch components and low-gloss trim panels exude a quality that is uncommon in the segment.
The instrument panel is an excellent example of how Cruze eschews expectations of compact cars. It features richly detailed instruments that are backlit with light-emitting diode (LED) technology. The LED lights provide a crisp, ice-blue illumination of the analog instruments, as well as lighting for other interior controls. A segment-rare standard driver information center delivers a wealth of data to the vehicle owner.
Blending harmoniously with the instrument panels is an integrated center stack that houses the infotainment display, climate controls and radio controls. Flush-mounted components within the center stack have a gap tolerance of less than 1 mm, while the instrument panel-to-door panel gaps are less than 5 mm. Those tolerances are among the best in the class and contribute significantly to the Cruze’s aura of refinement and precision.
Cruze’s headliner and pillar trim exude craftsmanship, too. The headliner cover is made of a knit material that also serves as one of five layers of an acoustically designed headliner to help make the passenger compartment quieter. The interior pillar and other moldings are color- and grain-matched to the headliner, while seat inserts are color-matched to the color of the instrument panel accent trim, giving the cabin the detailed appearance of larger, upscale sedans.
New, efficient powertrains
Enhanced with its exhaust-driven turbocharger, the Cruze’s Ecotec 1.4L turbo performs like a larger engine when needed, but retains the efficiency of a small-displacement four-cylinder in most driving conditions. It is standard on LT and LTZ models, with power ratings estimated at 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm). With the Ecotec 1.4L turbo, Cruze’s fuel efficiency enables a cruising range of more than 500 miles (800 km), meaning it can go longer between fill-ups.
Standard on LS models is an Ecotec 1.8L four-cylinder that has the same basic architecture as the 1.4L turbo. Both engines are part of GM’s family of global small-displacement engines designed with fuel efficiency in mind, including technology such as full variable valve timing that optimizes performance and fuel economy across the rpm band.
Backing the Cruze’s new four-cylinder engines are six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Each contributes to Cruze’s excellent fuel economy.
Cruze is backed by GM’s five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty – the best coverage in America.
Responsive, quiet driving experience
Complementing Cruze’s new powertrains is a strong body structure and chassis system designed to deliver a responsive and fun driving experience. The body structure is tight and stiff; and its solidity enabled engineers to more precisely tune the chassis for comfort and driving control.
A MacPherson strut suspension is used up front, while a technically advanced Watts Z-link design is used with the rear suspension. It helps center the rear axle during cornering, helping to keep the Cruze’s handling responses symmetrical on both left-hand and right-hand turns. The linkage’s capability to center the axle during cornering delivers a more balanced driving experience, as the rear suspension better follows the lead of the front suspension.
StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, as well as traction control and anti-lock brakes, are standard. Electric power steering is also standard on all models. It helps save fuel because it removes the conventional power steering pump from the engine’s driven accessories. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard on LS and LT models, with 17-inch alloy wheels standard on LTZ. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are available on 2LT and LTZ models.
Along with a responsive driving experience, the Cruze delivers quietness and refinement on the road. Hydraulic ride bushings and an isolated engine cradle reduce or eliminate vibration pathways that could otherwise be transmitted to the passenger compartment. Similarly, a number of noise-reducing and noise-cancelling technologies are employed throughout the body structure, including 18 distinctive acoustical treatments. Examples include:
The steel front-of-dash panel is sandwiched between two damping mats Nylon baffles are used in various hollow portions of the body structure and filled with sound-absorbing foam that expands when the body enters the paint oven The headliner comprises five layers of thermal fiber acoustic material, including a premium woven fabric on the visible outer layer Patches of sound-damping material are applied strategically throughout the body structure and melt into place when the body passes through the paint oven, allowing the patches to follow the contours of the sheet metal below Sound insulation material between rear-body structural components that is made from recycled denim The doors have triple seals and feature fiberglass “blankets” that serve as water, airflow and noise barriers. The doors are also beta-braced, meaning they close with a solid, precise sound and no resonanceAbout Chevrolet
Chevrolet is one of America’s best-known and best-selling automotive brands, and one of the fastest growing brands in the world. With fuel solutions that range from “gas-friendly to gas-free,” Chevrolet has nine models that offer an EPA-estimated 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway, and offers two hybrid models. More than 2.5 million Chevrolets that run on E85 biofuel have been sold. Cruze Beats Corolla As GM Leads a Strong Sales Month
Both GM and Ford estimate April industry sales of about 1.7 million including medium and heavy-duty trucks. That’s a Seasonally Adjusted Average Rate in the mid-13 million range, in case you care about that.
Chevrolet had a big month in selling sedans. It sold a record 25,160 Cruzes to 24,701 Malibus and 21,071 Impalas. Break out retail sales among Cruze and Malibu, however, and the compact’s sales consisted of 18,470 retail units and 6,690 fleet, while the midsize car, which will be replaced early next year with the 2013 Malibu, sold 13,599 retail and 11,102 fleet. The ancient Impala is heavily fleet.
Both Chevy and Ford already seem to be benefitting from slowed production at Japanese automakers.
GM’s push to move the compact class out of the bargain basement seems to be working. Chevy sales chief Alan Batey says the average transaction price of a Cruze is about $19,000, while the ATP for the Malibu is about $21,000.
We’re downsizing our engines, too. There is a replacement for displacement, according to Ford’s George Pipas. In December, Ford sold 100 percent of retail F-150s with V-8s. Last month, half of the F-150s sold retail left dealers’ lots with V-6s. The EcoBoost 3.5-liter made up 37 percent of F-150 retail sales, while the naturally aspirated 3.7 V-6 accounted for 13 percent.
Ford says strong truck fleet sales points to an improving commercial market, and national economy.
GM says its retail sales increased 25 percent over a year ago, with passenger car retail up 49 percent and crossover retail up 28 percent. Fleet sales comprised 33 percent of GM’s April ’11 number and 36 percent of Ford’s numbers. Year-to-date, they comprise 26 percent of GM’s sales and 34 percent of Ford’s. However, Ford breaks its fleet sales out in terms of the more profitable government and commercial fleet, which accounted for 20 percent in April and 19 percent year-to-date, versus daily rental fleet, which was 16 percent and 15 percent. Half of Ford’s April fleet sales consisted of F-Series, Econolines and Crown Victorias.
Toyota says fleet sales remain under 10 percent and that share will decline as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami takes its effect on the company’s production. The resulting parts shortages and factory power outages has affected supply more than sales, though if you don’t like the color selection of your local dealer’s Prii, you might go to a competitor. Toyota reports a 45-day supply of Camrys and about 40 days for Corolla. Prius is down to 10 days, though Toyota promises it will find you one before it turns away any customers.
And so, to the numbers …
1. General Motors 232,538, up 26.4 percent.
At 25,160, the Chevrolet Cruze passed Toyota Corolla last month. That compares with 13,701 Cobalts sold in April ’10 (Chevy also sold 37 Cobalts last month).April was a strong month for Camaro and Mustang, though Challenger was down. If you’re nostalgic for a straight-to-rental compact, Ford has about 2,500 ’11 Foci remaining.Fusion was up 11.7 percent to 21,189, falling behind Chevy Malibu’s retail/fleet sales.Ford claims the Explorer as a success, with 12,593 sold, up 137.9 percent over the old, body-on-frame model. Taurus was up 1.6 percent, to 6,262.Even with spy shots showing up for the ’13 Vertrek-inspired Escape, the old model sells well, at 21,240, up 10.9 percent.Lincoln sales fell 0.6 percent, to 7,236. The MKZ, at 2,546, up 40.1 percent, and the MKX, at 1,859, up 16.5 percent, were the only gainers. MKS plummeted 28.6 percent, to 828, MKT was off 27 percent to 456, and Navigator outsold its unibody sibling, at 604, off 35.6 percent. Dealers sold 0 Mercurys last month, down from 9,128 in April ’10.3. Toyota Motor Sales: 159,540, up 1.3 percent
Sales were off 2.4 percent, when adjusted for daily sales rate (27 selling days in April ’11 versus 26 in April ’10). Like Ford last year, Toyota had a very good April ’10, with a 24.4 percent increase.Camry was up 5 percent, to 30,443 units, one of the few volume models posting an increase.Corolla was off 16.5 percent (by daily selling rate), to 24,215. GM Recalls 2011 Chevrolet Cruze For Steering, Shifter Issues
2011 Chevrolet Cruze
General Motors [NYSE: GM] is recalling nearly all of its 2011 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan models built to date for two potential issues both related to vehicle assembly.
According to the automaker, in about 154,000 Cruze models, the intermediate steering shaft covers need to be inspected for proper installation, while the automatic-transmission shift linkage needs to be checked in more than 120,000 Cruze sedans. All of the affected Cruze models were built in Lordstown, Ohio, and about 129,000 of those 154,000 Cruze models recalled are in the U.S.
The concern with the steering issue is that the shaft might not have been properly installed; GM cited one complaint in which the owner, in a parking lot, turned the steering wheel without a change in direction from the vehicle. Likewise, the automatic transmission shifter could potentially still be in gear when it's in the 'Park' position.
This isn't the first steering-related issue for the Cruze, or for compact GM sedans. Just last month, GM recalled some Cruze models for a steering-wheel issue, in which it might not have been properly fastened to the steering column at the factory. The action had been prompted by an incident in which the steering wheel actually detached into a Minnesota driver's hands at 65 mph.
Since the recall doesn't actually involve any redesigned parts, expect to hear from General Motors soon regarding the recall effort; otherwise you can call Chevrolet at 800-630-2438, or check in with the GM Owner Center.

Pick One for the U.S.: Cruze Hatch, Ford B-Max or Suzuki Swift
It’s like the argument for the diesel-powered, stick-shift station wagon. Sure, VW sells a few thousand such Jetta wagons a year. For a company like Volkswagen, with ambitions to more than triple its sales in the U.S. over the next seven years, that’s not enough.
Out of the Cruze hatchback, B-Max and Swift, all of which were revealed at this week’s 2011 Geneva show, only one of them would be a relative success in America, and (hint), “relative” is the key word.
Chevy Cruze hatchback?
The only argument Chevrolet has for bringing this car to the U.S. is the new 2012 Ford Focus hatchback. One Ford is so confident about that car that you can only get the base Focus model with its loss-leader price in the sedan bodystyle. Ford figures that because Americans have been willing to pay premium small car prices for the Mini they’ll do the same for a C-segment Ford.
You, me, and most our fellow enthusiasts tend to like “European” design, including the ever-handy hatchback. We’re not average American buyers, who tend to prefer their hatchbacks in crossover sport/utility form and their cars as midsize sedans with lots of space and good fuel efficiency.
While the Cruze hatchback’s body adds another 14 cubic feet or so of cargo space, it retains the same seating package as the sedan. Rear seat space is adequate for a compact sedan in the U.S., though some criticize it for being a bit cramped.
Hatchbacks don’t sell to average car buyers. BMW has sold more Minis in the U.S. than officially projected because the car is a Mini, not because the car is a hatchback. In fact, Mini intentionally projected no more than 20,000 sales for the 2002 model year, and handily beat it. Yes, some Americans are buying some hatchback models, but the hatches they’re buying have other strong selling points, and sell well as hatchbacks because they’re outlier car buyers. After all, America’s bestselling hatchback is the Toyota Prius.
Ford B-Max?
The B-Max is the tall MPV off the Fiesta platform, just as the upcoming Ford C-Max, to be sold in North America, is a tall MPV off the Focus platform. Will Ford bring the B-Max to the U.S.?
The c-segment, one-bodystyle Cruze is far outselling the b-segment, two-bodystyle Fiesta in the U.S., so the b-segment has only limited appeal in the States. The B-Max has some very attractive features, though. Its rear doors slide back, American minivan-like, and there’s no b-pillar. So you can get people and things in and out of the B-Max easily, just like that other hot-selling model without a fixed b-pillar, the, er, Honda Element.
The B-Max is just 4.3 inches longer than a Fiesta, so if you have tight parking quarters at the home or office and often carry, say a couple of small kids or large dogs, you might make an argument for the B-Max. Like other modern Fords, its maker has put a lot of money and emphasis on the interior quality and comfort. There’s a six-inch touch screen for navigation, information/entertainment and other Sync/MyFord features.
MPVs or minivans as small as the C-Max or Mazda5, both of which offer three rows of seating for those grade school soccer team carpools, have yet to prove themselves in the North American market. I’d put my money on something like the Volkswagen Bulli as having a better chance of becoming a small hit. It’s just an electric-powered concept for now, and its four doors open conventionally, though both rows of seats fold flat for camping and such. So it’s probably a bit less versatile than the Ford B-Max. But the VW far exceeds the Ford in style, just like the Mini does compared with other hatchbacks sold in America.
The chances Ford will sell the B-Max in the U.S.? Very slim.
Suzuki Swift concept?
In the United States last year, Suzuki sold about 700 more vehicles than Ford sold Fiestas. Remember, Ford only launched the Fiesta midyear. The Swift, sold under various model nameplates as a Suzuki, a Chevy and in Canada as the Pontiac Firefly, has been absent from our shores since the ‘90s. The new model is what the Mini was supposed to be to its original; a natural evolution over several generations.
It’s a B-segment two-door hatchback in concept form, though it will be available, again, as a four-door hatch. Suzuki didn’t reveal the next model’s drivetrain options, though there’s talk it would again get turbocharging and perhaps even all-wheel-drive. It has potential as a pocket-rocket with more enthusiasts’ appeal than the Fiesta, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and possibly even the 2012 Chevy Sonic.
Importing the Swift to the U.S. is no small beer. It takes millions of dollars to certify a car for crash and emissions. Even the Cruze hatchback would have to meet crash and rollover certification.
If Suzuki is committed to the U.S. market, what does it have to lose by importing the Swift (beyond those millions of dollars)? Probably just enthusiasts and a few other outliers would shop this car. But when you’re selling just 24,000 vehicles a year in the U.S., another 5,000 to 10,000 units of a car with an admittedly low profit margin sounds like a good deal.
Of these three Euro-centric models, the Suzuki Swift is the one that should come to the U.S.

VIDEO: 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, Two-Minute Drive Review
The EPA rates the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco at 28 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, when it's fitted with the six-speed manual transmission.
But can the Cruze Eco really reach beyond that magic 40-mpg number, which is highway mileage only?
On our recent road test, we averaged 34.2 mpg--slightly better than the EPA combined rating of 33 mpg--probably due to logging more highway mileage than around-town use.
In the video below, we discuss the pros and cons of this uber-economical Cruze, including some of the technologies that give it the remarkable highway fuel economy rating.
If you can't drive a stick, by the way, the EPA says the 2011 Cruze Eco with a six-speed automatic transmission gets 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, for a combined rating of 30 mpg.
Below is the first of what will be a few videos on the 2011 Cruze Eco. We plan to shoot similar short videos for most of the cars we'll be testing in future.
Let us know what you think of our video efforts in the Comments below.

Hotter Cruze SS on the way for Holden?
In an effort to take on established performance-oriented rivals, General Motors’ Australian division, Holden, is said to be preparing a sport-oriented version of its domestically-built Cruze.
Launching now as both a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan, the Holden Cruze is mostly identical to the Ohio-built North American-specification Chevrolet Cruze. Of course, the Down Under variant features lightly revised styling and a steering wheel on the opposite side.
Australia’s GoAuto suggests that the Cruze SS could use a version of GM’s upsized 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, an engine already offered in the Opel Astra. Since the Astra and the Cruze share GM’s Delta II front-wheel-drive architecture, the larger engine would be a natural fit for the Cruze.
In the Astra, the 1.6-liter unit cranks out 178 horsepower and 170 lb-ft. of torque. Thanks to the turbocharger, the four-cylinder offers peak torque from 2,200 to 5,400 rpm. That’s a healthy increase over the 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque offered by the current range-topping 1.4-liter turbo four.
“Every engine option available in the Astra is under review,” an unnamed GM “insider” told GoAuto.
The sportier Cruze, badged as a Chevrolet, could also make sense in North America, where the four-door-only offering is selling well but has seen its powertrain derided by some in the press for its middling acceleration.
Holden launches Series II Cruze
To celebrate domestic production of the Cruze, Holden lightly facelifted the existing South Korea-built model and rechristened it the Series II Cruze (see image gallery).
Although mechanically identical to the outgoing imported Cruze, which was launched about two years ago in Australia, the new car will be offered in both four-door and five-door hatchback configurations, the latter of which was envisioned and designed by Holden. Other markets – namely Europe – will also get access to the hatchback.
Revisions to the lower grille and front fascia are designed to make the Cruze look more like its larger Holden Commodore sibling. A new 6T30 automatic transmission replaces the outgoing 6T40 unit for 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated Cruzes, while the 2.0-liter turbodiesel has been uprated for an additional 13 horsepower and 30 lb-ft. of torque.
New for the Australian market is the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine offered in all but base North American Cruzes. Dubbed iTi (intelligent turbo induction) by Holden, the 1.4-liter brings with it electric power steering (in place of hydraulic) and a Watt’s linkage added to the rear torsion beam suspension. The Watt’s linkage is standard across the board on North American Cruzes.

Sixteen-inch wheels are standard on LS and LT models, with 17-inch alloy wheels standard on LTZ. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are available on 2LT and LTZ models.
