Verdict: 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Limited

I like the Legacy, but think Subaru is missing opportunity by sticking with their all-awd lineup. With advances in traction and stability control technology, awd is simply not needed in much of the nation, and the reduction in weight and driveline friction and noise would mean nice gains in mileage and refinement. It ranks about 4th on my depth chart for this segment, after the Mazda 6 GT, Fusion Sport and Optima SX (but ahead of the Camry, Accord, Altima,Malibu and Sonata) !! I don't know about back east, but on the west coast once you own one you will never want to get rid of it. I have an 09 GT which was the last yr it was available with an auto, which I only went with because of excessive freeway travel on the 101 fwy.

It's fast, turns on a dime, and has been very reliable. I am at 50K miles, and have had no problems at all. I love driving this car, and the Sherman Oaks dealer has a few new GT's with Navi, Harmon Kardon sound system, and power moonroof for 32 and 33K respectively. As far as the comments in regards to refinement. Name another car with AWD, speed, and handling this good for that price and than compare it to a TSX and G25.

Remember this Motortrend; the TSX and G25 are intro luxary cars that yield to a different market, and the Legacy GT is the fun to drive alternate to a Camry or Accord.

2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition

When the 2006 Corvette Z06 was introduced, it represented the closest connection to the Corvette race cars ever. The 2009 Corvette ZR1 closed the gap between racing and production even further. This year, Corvette continues its tradition of track-to-street technology transfer with the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

 “Designed to further incorporate technology developed through racing, the Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first race in the 24 Hours of LeMans,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. “With a limited production of 500 units, this car is a must-have for the true Corvette collector and driving enthusiast.”

The Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is another example of the expanded Corvette line-up. Five years ago, customers had the choice of a Corvette coupe or convertible. With the addition of the Z06, Grand Sport coupe and convertible and ZR1, Corvette enthusiasts now have more choices than ever.

“For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. “For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time.”

This limited edition Z06 will boast Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with specific dark gray metallic calipers. These powerful brakes were first introduced on the ZR1.  Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels complement the car’s Michelin PS2 tires. Other mechanical features include Magnetic Selective Ride Control for the first time on the Z06 and enhanced cooling. The car also features a special carbon pattern engine cover.

The Corvette Z06 Carbon will be available in two colors: Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06’s dynamic design and reduce mass and aerodynamic lift. For track events, customers can also install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

The Z06 Carbon’s ebony leather and suede interior is complemented by blue or orange seat stitching to match the exterior color chosen. Other features include a unique steering wheel emblem, sill plate and logoed headrest. The suede used on the steering wheel, shifter, seat inserts, armrests and doors add to the luxury of this limited edition Z06.

An optional Z07 performance package that includes the mechanical upgrades introduced on the Z06 Carbon can be added to a regular 2011 Z06. This package also includes Competition Gray 20-spoke wheels and all the chassis and cooling upgrades.

The CFZ Z06 carbon fiber package includes black carbon fiber rockers, splitter and roof panel with the full-width body color spoiler. It can also be purchased with or without the Z07 package on regular Z06 models.

First Test: 2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited V-6

Elder Compact Crossover Statesman Still Carries Big Stick2011 Toyota Rav4 Limited V 6 Front View In Motion It's a typical sunny Friday afternoon in L.A. -- time to hit the road after another week performing my role in the office zombie routine. Let's see what's in the garage. The Pacific Blue Metallic 2011 Toyota RAV4 should fit the bill. Hmm, when was the last time Toyota updated the RAV4 (not counting the EV co-op with Tesla)? It looks comfortable. I bet my mom would dig it. It's the top-of-the-line Limited trim with the 3.5-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. Those don't sound like volume-seller specs to me. Anyway, let's get rolling. Crikey, how do I adjust the side mirrors on this thing? (*A minute or two later*) Ah, the side mirror toggle is down on the center console between the auxiliary audio jack and the parking brake. Why is the traction-control switch next to the seat-warmer buttons? I really should be paying more attention to the drive than to my trivial attempt at critiquing the interior. If only I weren't stuck in another Los Angeles traffic jam. Drat. Hands up if you didn't see that coming...

2011 Toyota Rav4 Limited V 6 Front Three Quarters (*An hour and 20 miles later*) I'm getting tired. Since this particular RAV4 has no USB input, I can't listen to my own tunes, and the local radio is starting to get old. Worst of all, the freeway monotony seems to have dulled my mental processes. I'm languishing away, ensnared in a motorcade bind that I'd rather not be a part of...oh, good, traffic is clearing up. I'll just push my right foot farther down into the footwell...

That's when I was re-introduced to what the V-6 and all-wheel drive can do. It's no secret that power can be addictive, regardless of vehicle packaging, and the RAV4 V-6's performance did manage to turn heads back in 2006 (the current generation's first model year). Save for the Audi Q5 3.2 (270 hp) and BMW X3 xDrive35i (300 hp), no other small crossover can trump the RAV4's 269 horsepower. And even then, the Toyota CUV doesn't have much company: Only the Acura RDX (240 hp), Kia Sportage SX (260 hp), Mazda CX-7 s (244 hp), and Mercedes-Benz GLK350 (268 hp) are within striking distance.

First Test: 2011 Subaru Tribeca Limited

Change Can't Come Soon Enough for This Mid-Pack Crossover2011 Subaru Tribeca Front Three Quarters A lot happened in the four years since we last drove the second-generation Subaru Tribeca. Two new countries declared sovereignty, more than 40,000 species were discovered, and an exuberant Antoine Dodson rose to YouTube fame in mere days. But unlike the ever-evolving globe it traverses, the 2011 Subaru Tribeca remains roughly the same mid-pack contender it was when it debuted as a 2006 model. And after a week behind its three-spoke wheel, we have a better understanding why. But before all the juicy details are revealed, some important data must be considered. If an ever-changing lineup of contenders incuding the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Dodge Durango wasn't enough reason for a major mid-cycle revitalization, consider the Tribeca's sales figures.

2011 Subaru Tribeca Front Three Quarter Dealers moved 16,790 Tribecas in 2007, when a revamped model was introduced with a more efficient 3.6-liter flat-six, updated five-speed automatic, and a less offensive snout. A year later, that mark fell to 10,975 units. In 2009, sales dwindled to 5930 units. Last year, Subaru sold just 2472 Tribecas in the U.S. By comparison, industry giant Toyota sold 92,121 Highlanders. The good news for Subaru is the rest of its lineup is selling relatively well. Subaru's product planners implemented a few packaging readjustments for the 2009 and 2010 model year Tribecas, which included dropping certain trim designations and establishing a standard seven-passenger seating configuration. The changes obviously have had little effect on sales.

Back to the juicy details. Looking at the mid-range 4219-pound Tribeca Limited, it's easy to mistake it for an overgrown Outback. Most staffers did. Since seeing a Tribeca "in the wild" is as rare as spotting a Yeti at the mall, a brief moment of surprise when encountering one is normal. This brings us to a major sticking point: its confusingly plain styling. It isn't unattractive, but it garners no second looks and even a few stern stares. No showiness, dynamic character lines, or bold wheel arches here.

Chrysler reveals limited edition Mopar ’11 Charger

Following an earlier teaser sketch, Dodge has officially revealed the Mopar ’11 Charger. The Mopar ’11 Charger follows in the footsteps of last year’s Mopar ’10 Challenger.

Based on the R/T version of the all-new Dodge Charger, the Mopar ’11 features a 370 horsepower, 395 lb-ft of torque version of Chrysler’s 5.7L HEMI V8. Paired with Dodge’s “Super Trac Pac”, Mopar says that the Mopar ’11 Charger is capable of accelerating from 0-60 in the low 5-second range.

“After the success of our Mopar ’10 Challenger, we moved on to the iconic Dodge Charger and added even more performance,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “As a new company, we will continue to leverage the heritage of the Mopar brand at every turn.”

But the Mopar ’11 Charger promises to be more than just a straight-line performer, thanks to larger front and rear sway bars and front and rear strut tower braces. To aid in luggage capacity, the rear tower braces are removable.

The exterior of the Mopar ’11 Charger is finished off in “Pitch Black” — the only color available — with Mopar blue stripes. The Mopar ’11 rides on a set of 20-inch five-spoke wheels.

Inside the Mopar ’11 Charger carries over the exterior’s black and blue color scheme, complimented by Katzkin leather seats.

Mopar is planning to produce just 1,000 examples of the Mopar ’11 Charger — 900 for the U.S. and 100 for Canada. Prices will start at $39,750, including destination.

Ford: Supply Limited For Black, Red Vehicles

If you're looking for one of several Ford or Lincoln vehicles in black or red, you'd better be ready to settle with what's out at the dealership—and potentially even paying a little extra. Ford has just told its dealerships to halt orders of some models with certain hues of semi-metallic red or black paint, because of a supply interruption due to the recent earthquake in Japan.

Tuxedo Black is temporarily not offered for order on a number of Ford trucks and SUVs, as well as the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKX. There's also a problem with red for Ford F-Series Super Duty and Ranger pickups, Econoline vans, and the Ford Focus and Lincoln Navigator.

According to CNN Money, both hues rely on an ingredient called Xirallic to get a slightly metallic look, and the recent natural disaster in Japan caused a supply disruption from the company that was providing it.

Don't look for the shortage to last that long; Ford is looking for another ingredient to take its place.
