Jaguar teases new diesel-powered XF, indicates U.S. availability

Wednesday, Mar 30th, 2011 @ 5:35 p.m.

Jaguar has announced it is developing a new four-cylinder diesel engine for its XF range. Interestingly, it appears as though oil burner may eventually be available on our shores.

Billed as the company’s most fuel efficient engine to date, the new 2.2L turbocharged four-cylinder is said to be capable of returning 52.3mpg on the combined cycle. Despite that outstanding economy, the new mill still manages to crank out 190 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62 run in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.

The new mill also ushers in Jaguar’s new eight-speed automatic transmission and a revised Start-Stop system. Unlike Jaguar’s previous Start-Stop system, the new version allows the motor to restart before the vehicle has come to a complete stop, thereby reducing the time spent in the shut-down and startup phases.

U.S. bound?
Although most diesel offerings are reserved for the European market, Jaguar has indicated the 2.2L-powered XF will be available in the U.S. No official plans have been revealed, but Jaguar says it will announce all the details at the fast-approaching New York Auto Show.
