Thanks to the early success of the A1, Audi is considering the revival of its A2 small car. The A2 was a fuel economy champ during its time, but was discontinued in 2005 due to slow sales.
With buyers trending toward the smaller end of the premium cars, Audi is considering a revival of its A2 nameplate.
“A new A2 is being discussed internally and a number of concepts are being looked at,” an insider told Autocar. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was shown first as a concept.”
The insider added that the new A2 would be “futuristic, low volume and use state-of-the-art technology.”
The A2 posted impressive fuel economy figures, thanks in large part to its low curb weight. Using an all-aluminum body shell Audi was able to keep the A2’s weight to just 1,975 pounds, although the A2 1.2 TDI model tipped the scales at just 1,815 pounds. Audi engineers are said to be targeting a weight of just 1,760 pounds for the new car.
In order to reach such a low weight, the A2 would use Audi’s new Multimaterial Space Frame technology, which uses aluminum, steel and carbon fiber.
No word on when the new Audi A2 will bow, but expect it to carry a not-so-small car price.
