New car dealers have rarely been able to provide more than the most basic routine service for vehicles made by manufacturers other than the brands they sell, but a deal between Chrysler and Magneti Marelli will soon see that change.
Magneti Marelli, which is a division of Fiat, produces a wide range of parts for new cars, including brakes shocks and oil filters that fit around 85 percent of all cars on the road, Chrysler said in a statement.
The automaker says that around 2.6 million drivers visited Chrysler dealers to have their non-Chrysler product worked on. Most service appointments didn’t go far beyond basic oil changes and tire rotations which don’t require many vehicle-specific parts.
Now, Chrysler says that its relationship with Fiat’s Magneti Marelli means that its service centers won’t need to source parts from other dealerships just to fix non-Chrysler products.
Chrysler dealers would not be able to perform warranty work for other brands, however, since those contracts always stipulate that repairs are made only in authorized service centers.
