The MG brand hasn’t had much significance since the MGB roadster went out of production in 1980, but the now Chinese-owned marque says it is developing an all-new sports car that will put the brand back on the map.
According to Autocar, MG has officially given the green light to a new roadster. Set to replace the TF in MG’s lineup, the new model could be on European roads as early as 2013.
“A brand like MG needs a true sports car in its offering,” said MG Motor UK Ltd sales and marketing boss Guy Jones.
He added: “As soon as our primary line-up of volume models is established in the UK, we expect to introduce one.”
Details remain few and far between at this point, but the new roadster model will be based on either the MG 3 or the MG 5. The MG 5’s underpinnings – which are actually borrowed from the Roewe 350 – appear to be the leading candidate at this point as it would allow for larger engines and a rear-wheel drive layout. The platform is even said to be flexible enough to use a mid-engine setup.
Although the European market will have access to the new MG model, it’s doubtful the MG brand will be sold in the U.S. anytime soon.
